Ian's Race

For as long as I have known Momma G we have always had weddings on the weekend that they race for her son, Ian.  He passed away more than a decade ago from SMA, which doesn't have a cure.  They do this race in memory of him, in front of his tree and to help raise money and awareness for the cure.  I was glad that this year we were finally able to join in the race and show our support!  This is also the kids first official race, were we signed them up, picked up their packets and they got to do their race and get a medal at the end!  They were so excited because they were racing just like Momma and Papa.

G let me do this race as one of us had to be on kid detail.  We looked up the race beforehand and saw that they only gave our medals to the top 5 in their age group, instead of everybody getting one.  I checked out last years times and if I hauled bunda then I would be able to medal.  However, I hadn't run in about two weeks due to the move and various other things and it was hot and humid that day, so I wasn't sure how it was going to.  I hadn't run a 5K in such a long time... and most of the time I'm not even warmed up til about mile 4 or 5, so it was a whole another game.  It felt like I was sprinting the entire time and my lungs were burning!  I wasn't pleased when I crossed the line with my time but  there wasn't anything I could do about it then!  I also felt guilty because I wanted to do this race thinking I could medal and I definitely didn't think that I did.  We stuck around after my race so the kids could do theirs and they rocked!  Tristan and Lucy took off once they started and never stopped. It was only half a mile, but that is still good for little legs!  Norah walked some, ran a bit and I carried her a little too.  She looked at me and said, "Its soooo hot." haha.  And, she was right.

there was a parade afterwards which we stayed for because the kids have never experienced one!  I was always so worried that they were gonna run out into the road but they did well.  Momma G brought plastic bags so they had something to collect all the candy they collected.  they thought it was awesome!  Turns out I did medal in my age group, which was nice... and I didn't feel like I had wasted everybody's time by running.  :)

We hung out with Momma G until we saw her son, Maison walk by in the parade and then headed home.  It was hot and humid out and I definitely needed to take a shower.  The morning started way quicker than I was anticipating because I slept through my alarm and we had 10 minutes to get out the door but we did it!  We were thinking of going to the beach with my dad later but the weather wasn't behaving and it looked like it was going to rain.

Thinking of you Ian and all those sweet ones with SMA.  You are loved.

JVG
