He first asked Gaetan if he could have a bike at night time... and continued to ask for a few nights in a row. So, then we considered the idea of letting him have a bike, and started researching some options. Since there is such a nice trail by our place we figured we could get him a bike that attaches onto one of our bikes (kinda tandem style) so then he could pedal and stuff too. He was very specific in the type of bike he wanted... he wanted to have a red bike and he was real excited about getting a helmet too!
We told him that bikes were for big boys and that he had to prove to us that he could handle such a fun thing. So we gave him some guidelines of what he needed to do in order to get this bike.
1.) He needed to listen right away. Whether it is putting his toys away, coming to eat, or whatever, he needed to do it quickly. We explained that on a bike if he's riding and we tell him to do something he needs to be able to do it quickly in case of danger.
2.) He had not throw fits if we were doing something or at some place he wanted to be and it was time to go. Most of the time it's leaving the library, and he's usually really good about it, but there are times he gets a wild hair and shows us that he really is still 2.
3.) He had to share things nicely with Lucy. They are getting better with playing with each other, and he is getting a better understanding that she is younger than he is, therefore she doesn't do things the same way, or understand the same things he does.
And he has been doing these things ever since he's been asking for a bike... so today the weather was nice, so we thought it would be a good day for it.
